The Chancery of the Eastern American Diocese announces a collection for the victims of Hurricane Helene
On Thursday, September 26, 2024, the southeastern United States was impacted by Hurricane Helene, which left extensive damage in its path, as well as numerous fatalities and injuries.
Giving thanks to God, the Diocesan Administration has been in contact with the rectors of the parishes along the storm path, and thankfully no loss of life or damage to church property has been reported. However, the communities surrounding diocesan parishes have catastrophic damage.
Archpriest Steven Webb (rector of St Nicholas Church in Fletcher, NC) reports that are extensive power outages, loss of cell-phone reception, and gas shortages. Parishioners who are displaced have been taking up shelter in the parish buildings temporarily.
Archpriest Matthew Williams (rector of St Tikhon Church in Blountville, TN) has also reported on the devastating damage in surrounding communities, with at least two families’ homes being completely destroyed by floodwaters. The parish has been working tirelessly to work in conjunction with local authorities to transport individuals and deliver food and water supplies.
Based on the reports, the restoration of the communities affected, especially in western North Carolina region, will be long and arduous, and all those involved are in need of collective prayer and support.
Those who wish to support the relief efforts are encouraged to donate through the Fund for Assistance to ROCOR for further disbursement.
